What if a store refuses the newsletter?

Well, you can't force them to take it. But, you may be able to convince them with a little effort. They are likely refusing it for one of several reasons:

Lack of Counter Space

  • Offer to leave the stand in the corner, by the condiment station, on a flat topped trash bin, etc.  Demonstrate with an actual stand.  They'll see just how small a space you really need.

Unsure of Customer Interest

  • Explain that there is no obligation. If they don't want it anymore, they can just let you know the next time you are in, or give you a call (your number is on every issue). You'll take it out with no questions asked.

Competitor Present

  • So there is a competetive newsletter and they don't want two newsletters?  It might be a little forward, but why not tell them to get rid of the competitor? Tell them how great your newsletter is. If they don't bite, ask them to let their customers choose. Say you'll leave it for 2 weeks, and the owner can decide which one gets read more often. Chances are, it'll be you.
