Drop ShadowAre you looking for a way to accentuate a particular ad?  Are you profiling an advertiser each week in your newsletter, and need a way to make them stand out?  Why not try adding a little something extra to their ad?  Add a Drop Shadow.

Before you send your file to the printer, you will want to export it as a PDF.  It will create a flat "snapshot" of your file, which is a much better format for the printer.  If you send it as an InDesign file, there are many things that can go wrong.

  • The printer might not have the same fonts as you, and they will be substituted
  • If you don't "attach" all of your images, they will become pixelated and blurry when the printer opens the file.  They will also appear that way on the printed newsletter
  • Files and text could be altered by accident as more people open/work on the file.  If you send a PDF, then you know it will arrive exactly as you intend.

Exporting to PDF

Exporting is a pretty easy process, but there are things that can go wrong.  If you don't have your settings correctly dialed in, then you could also run into issues.

The Laughable News FooterDo you design your own ads?  Or do you outsource the job?

Either is fine.  I always say, "Focus on your strengths".  If you don't feel comfortable designing your own ads, or just don't want to spend the time necessary to learn how to, then outsourcing is a great option.  Sometimes, it just makes more sense to focus on what you are good at, and pay someone a commission to sell your ads.

Now, with that said, I still think ad design is a skill that all of you should work on. It is very empowering to be able to create an ad for yourself.  No one is saying you need to build amazing ads, but a little know-how is never a bad thing.
