Hi Gary,
Before becoming a publisher, I printed out a sample newsletter for my community and I offered to do sample advertisements for 4 businesses at no charge to help fill up my sample newsletter. I thought that if I had "real" businesses advertise in my sample newsletter that it would seem more legit. 3 out of 4 of the businesses that I did sample ads for ended up signing a contract to advertise in the newsletter.
Once I had my sample newsletter ready, I went door to door to about 75 businesses in my area and gave them a copy of the newsletter along with my ad sizes and prices, and a list of establishments that would carry the paper. This stirred up a lot of interest; however, most of the businesses wanted to see how the paper did in print before buying an ad.
So, I had only sold three ads, before becoming a publisher. I purchased my templates for $60/week and I used the printer on this forum that prints 1000 copies for $75. So it costs me roughly $135/week to distribute the paper. One of the ads I sold was a block ad, the other two were medium size ads; this brings in a revenue of $120/week. So, when I first started publishing I was losing $15.00/week.
I've been publishing for two weeks now, and I sold another medium ad. So, now I'm making $15/week and all the ads I sell from here on out will be profit!!!
All in all I've discovered it takes time and effort, but I am beginning to see some results. Once I establish this paper, I plan on expanding and starting another edition. This is just my experience, I'm not a sellsman by nature, so I'm sure others have done much better than I have. Hope this helped!
