Borders around whole newsletter 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Hi,
I am interested in periodically adding a border to the outside edge of the paper, that will reflect different holidays, events, etc., such as a small flower border to celebrate Spring, hearts for Valentines Day, etc.
and wondered if anyone else was doing this?

Also, wondered how to do it, and where the "art" is found?

Hey Teri,

I've often thought about adding a seasonal border to the template. But, after some experimentation, I've discovered that it is going to be virtually impossible. The reason is that there just isn't much space to play around with; everything on the template is packed into place.

The existing border is just a simple black line. To add any sort of image around the border would probably require at least 1` inch of space. If you do that, the image will be underneath all sorts of things: ads, logo, contact info at the bottom, etc. Instead of adding to the appeal, it takes away from it.A border is a tricky thing with the template.

So, are there any options? Of course...there is always something you can do.

Corner Graphics
  • Sacrifice a small ad space in each corner, and add a corner graphic that suits the season. ie. Leafs for Autumn, or some Ornaments for X-mas. - see example below
  • I personally don't like this option. It takes away from your ad spaces, may not look great when converted to grayscale, and in my opinion, just doesn't add much to the newsletter. I think the next option is a better idea

Add graphics to content column
  • Cut some of the content column and add a festive image in it's place. - ie. Remove 3 or 4 lines of "Hooked-On-Facts" and place an image there. Or do it with some jokes.

  • You can usually find what you are looking for at a clipart/graphics website like www.dreamstime.com . That is where I found these images

    Hope that helps

The border you posted is very nice, but WAY more than what I had envisioned. I picture a simple line drawing, type of border. For spring, a continuous, flower, doodle style, and very narrow, perhaps only 1/4 an inch wide, or even less.

It may not be easy or even possible. My printer is having difficulty with it, as well. I can't seem to find a good picture example to demonstrate.

    Hey Teri,

Ok..I see what you want. I don't have any graphics for it, and it doesn't seem that Indesign has anything built in that allows for borders other that the simple black line. But, nothing is ever impossible. I'll keep my eyes open for something that might work. If I find it, I'll post it here.
